Music

Music is taught through weekly lessons following Sing Education’s curriculum by specialist music teachers. Our aim is to provide an enjoyable, challenging, and inclusive curriculum that enables all pupils to sing, play, create, and perform individually and collaboratively.

The curriculum builds a strong musical foundation, developing skills and knowledge progressively.

  • Early Years: Children experience music through singing games, rhymes, and listening activities, learning pitch matching and ensemble skills with percussion instruments.
  • Key Stage 1: Pupils explore pitch, pulse, and rhythm, develop their singing voice, and perform compositions. They are introduced to global music and basic notation (crotchets, quavers, rests) and glockenspiel skills.
  • Key Stage 2: Pupils deepen understanding of musical theory, notation, and genres (classical, pop, jazz, etc.), improvise in different styles, and read stave notation with complex rhythms. They gain confidence in singing and playing tuned/untuned instruments.

Lessons are delivered by Sing Education specialists using the Kodály method, ensuring logical progression and consolidation of prior learning. Half-termly units culminate in performances and reflections to assess progress. Additional opportunities include our school choir performances, concerts at venues like The Princess Alexandra Auditorium, and events such as Easterside’s Got Talent.

Music is embedded in school life through assemblies, clubs, and outdoor learning. Pupils access high-quality resources and instruments. We also partner with Tees Valley Music Service (TVMS), holding the ‘Music Mark’ badge, to provide expert tuition and live musician experiences.

Our goal: every child leaves Key Stage 2 with confidence, creativity, and a passion for music.
