At Easterside Academy we have four houses: Bell, Hollis, Bolckow and Grey. Each house is named after an inspirational local person. Children can achieve 'House Points' for good behaviour, good effort and good work.
Bell (Red) – Les Bell
‘Bell’ is named after Les Bell. Les Bell opened a chain of shops called ‘Bells Stores’. In 2004 Les Bell decided to retire and sold his 54 convenience stores to Sainsbury’s for around £22 million. Les Bell has visited our school.
Hollis (Green) – Stanley Hollis
Hollis was named after Stanley Hollis who was born on 21st September 1912. He grew up in Archibald Street. Stanley was presented the Victoria Cross by King George VI at Buckingham Palace on 10th October 1944. He was awarded this medal because he was a soldier in the second world war during the Normanby Invasion of Europe. Through his bravery he saved the lives of many, many men. He died on the 8th February 1972.
Bolckow (Yellow) – Henry Bolckow
Bolckow is named after Henry William Ferdinand Bolckow. He was born on the 8th December 1806 in Germany. Dying on the 18th July 1878. He was well known for becoming the first Mayor of Middlesbrough and the first member of Parliament for the town too. Henry lived in a very large house called Marton Hall. He wanted the people of Middlesbrough to enjoy the halls large grounds. These eventually became known as ‘Stewarts Park’.
Grey (Blue) – Tanni Grey Thompson
Grey is named after Tanni Grey-Thompson who was born in 1969 on the 26th July in Cardiff, Wales. Tanni lived a number of years in Redcar with her husband and her daughter. After she retired from wheelchair racing she went on to help disabled sports people. Tanni has visited our school.
Every child from Year 1 to 6 is put into one of the houses. House points are given as rewards at Easterside for good manners and good learning. Every week the house captains go around the KS2 classes collecting and adding up the total number of house points that week.
