Learning Outside the Classroom is Fun!

Last week Mr Elliott our Vice Chair of Governors came into school to speak to children from Reception to Year 6 about their learning outside the classroom at Easterside Academy.

Here are some of the thoughts the children shared with him.

Do you enjoy learning outside the classroom?

“Yes it’s fun outside!” – Year 1

“We can learn more things outside. Learn to do new things there isn’t room to do inside.” – Year 2

“It’s more fun than working on a computer all the time; you explore and find things out for yourself.” – Year 3

“We like visiting new places.” – Year 4

“There is more space outside. You have a wider experience outside e.g. being in a specific place.” – Year 5

“We loved camping under the stars.” “We have explored different areas we have never seen before.” – Year 6

How do you prepare for working outside?

“We need to wear coats and ear muffs.” – Reception

“We need to keep safe.” – Year 1

“If we are gardening we need gloves and wellingtons.” – Year 3

“We need to wear the right clothes depending on the weather.” – Year 4

“We need to learn and obey the safety rules and how to take risks safely.” – Year 6

What visits have you been on?

“We went to the Bakery and we learnt how to buy a cake and how to queue up in a shop.” – Year 1

“We visited Butterfly World. We studied the life cycle and we were able to hold a butterfly.” – Year 2

“We enjoyed going on the visit to the York Chocolate Factory as it was linked to our topic.” – Year 4

“We visited York Minster. We learnt how to behave in a church and to respect the users of the building.” – Year 5

“We went o Alnwick Castle and it was a History lesson. We learnt a great deal from all the information boards.” – Year 6

What have you enjoyed learning outside with our Outdoor Learning Assistant, Mrs Wilkinson?

“We learnt how to water the plants and how to look after them. We watched the plants growing and looked at how they change as they grow.” – Year 1

“We made bird feeders. We went bird watching and learnt the names of the different birds.” – Year 3

“We enjoyed gardening, planting potatoes, cleaning out the chickens and feeding them.” – Year 4

“We planted trees and bulbs and learnt how to do this properly. It is fun working with Mrs Wilkinson. We learn so much from her.” – Year 5

If you had a choice, would you prefer learning in the classroom or outside the classroom? Why?

“Both – i like to go outside but inside is cosy and warm.” – Year 1

“Both – inside we can learn different lessons and outside we can play imaginary game; we can keep fit and healthy.” – Year 2

“Outside – Instead of using computers it is about exploring real things.” – Year 3

“Outside – learning new things and looking at nature.” – Year 4

“We are learning in a different way outside.” – Year 5

“We can learn new skills outside such as survival skills.” – Year 6

“In and Out – we can do just as much in either environment.” – Year 6

“Out is amazing – we get to see more wonderful stuff.” – Year 6

“There is more space to run around and to explore – we are not limited to books.” – Year 6

Learning outside the classroom is a key feature of our curriculum at Easterside Academy and where possible we ensure that all pupils get the opportunity to learn both indoors and outdoors for a variety of different reasons and subjects.
